On Wednesday, October 9, Senator John Cornyn delivered a letter to the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs requesting that hearings be postponed on H.R. 759, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously in July and will ensure the fair and equal treatment of all Texas tribes. Despite the existence of electronic bingo in Texas already, protecting the Naskila Gaming facility – including the 650 jobs it supports and the $150 million it contributes annually to the state’s economy – doesn’t seem to be a priority for Cornyn, Senator Ted Cruz, or Governor Greg Abbott, who has refused to visit Naskila or take a meeting with the Tribe, even as the livelihoods of hundreds of East Texas families hang in the balance. It’s time to send them a message letting them know how disappointed East Texas is in Cornyn’s decision to block this critical piece of legislation. East Texas deserves elected leaders who put Texas first.
